Steel comes in many different forms and thicknesses. Plasma is definitely one of the best ways to go if you re cutting shapes from plate. For stainless tubing a circular saw is a perfect tool to use. Today i ll go over three different tools you can use to cut sheet metal and plate.

Steel thickness is referred to as gauge the smaller the number of gauge the thicker the steel. Thick using a ferrous metal cutting blade. Place a piece of 3 4 inch thick plywood flat on the floor. You can cut mild steel up to about 3 8 in.

Simply line up your chisel along the line you are going to cut and strike the back of it with a hammer. If you ve hit it hard enough the chisel will cut the sheet metal if it s thin enough. Cut metal with your circular saw. Is thin so it wouldn t be that difficult to cut with the bull dog snips scribe a cut line on the sheet and just follow it with the snips.

Thin gauge steel like sheet metal can be cut with a large variety of tools. Laser or waterjet may yield nicer edges but they are much more expensive to purchase and to run. Hot metal chips will fly. Set the steel plate on top of the plywood.

Cut the stainless steel. A soft wood backer will allow for the chisel to pass through more easily by providing support for the metal. It may not be an obvious choice but fitted with the right blade a circular saw is a great metal cutting tool. Thinner sheets however only require a tin snip.

After doing the first two steps you are ready to cut your stainless steel. In our test it cut through rebar like a hot knife through butter.
